About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Zagarese, in the historic centre of Rende. The building was begun in 1695 and for centuries belonged to the noble Zagarese family. After the earthquake of 1854 it was restored with the addition of a double loggia and a neoclassical colonnade; the municipality bought it in 1980 and restored it again in 2001–2002.
In September 1980 the city council set up a folklore museum dedicated to the anthropologist Raffaele Lombardi Satriani, which was later joined by the picture gallery named after Achille Capizzano. Together they form the Museo Civico, which also includes a historical section dedicated to Pietro Romanelli with an educational purpose. After the restoration the museum was reorganised into nine rooms on two levels.
The ethnoanthropological section holds about 3,000 objects, including photographs, documents, traditional costumes, utensils and work tools, with reconstructed rooms of a Calabrian home and workshop and a large part devoted to Arbëreshë and Grecanic cultures. The picture gallery holds works from the 17th to the 20th century, including Baroque paintings by Mattia Preti, Francesco Solimena and Cristoforo Santanna. A lutherie workshop has been active since 2016.
