About the museum

The MAON opened on 4 May 2004 on the initiative of the Centro per l'arte e la cultura “Achille Capizzano” of Rende, founded in 1997 and named after the artist Achille Capizzano, also from Rende. It is housed in Palazzo Vitari, in the historic centre of Rende. After several exhibitions hosted in the past, the Centre decided to create a collection of its own, dedicated in particular to Calabrian artists and to those who have worked in the area over the last two centuries.

Around the core of paintings by Achille Capizzano is gathered the work of many Calabrian artists of the diaspora, who are part of the national and international art scene. The collections include the Arte in Calabria collection, the section of Italian and international art, the Carmine D. Rizzo collection, the graphic section of the Maestri del Novecento (masters of the 20th century) and the Luigi Ladaga collection; the museum also holds an important documentary archive and a library.

From 2008 to 2009 the museum hosted a collection of 85 drawings, pastels, watercolours and prints by Umberto Boccioni. In 2024 the museum was accredited to the Sistema Museale della Regione Calabria and to the Sistema Museale Nazionale.
