About the museum
The Giardino dei Suoni is a private sculpture park created by the Bavarian sculptor and musician Paul Fuchs, born in 1936, in the countryside of Boccheggiano, a hamlet of Montieri, in the province of Grosseto. Since 1996 the artist has installed his own works there, with the idea of creating a route through the woods in which art and nature engage closely.
The sound sculptures are structures of iron and bronze made of two or more elements, some tens of metres high: the wind sets them in motion and makes them vibrate, producing metallic sounds. Among the best-known works are the “Uccello del vento” (Wind Bird) and the “Visita dell’extraterrestre” (Visit of the Extraterrestrial); the “Grande indicatore” reaches about 31 metres in height. Along the paths and on the meadows there are also stone and wood sculptures, partly made before the garden was created, and more figurative.
The park extends into the Mediterranean woodland surrounding the artist’s house and studio, over land of about 12 hectares. In a room set up as a music room the sculptures become musical instruments. Visits are possible by appointment only.
