About the museum
The gipsoteca (plaster cast gallery) is one of the museum sections of the Casa della Cultura “Leonida Repaci” (Leonida Repaci Cultural Centre) in Palmi, the cultural complex named after the writer Leonida Repaci, a native of Palmi. It holds the works of Michele Guerrisi, a sculptor born in Cittanova in 1893 and who died in Rome in 1963, who drew rigorously on classical antiquity and on the Magna Graecia roots of his homeland.
The display is based mainly on plaster casts of statues, portraits and miniatures of portals, which came to the city through the donation of the artist’s widow, Marta Rempte. Alongside the sculptures are watercolours and writings in which Guerrisi recounts his youth, his studies in Palmi and his meeting with Auguste Rodin.
The rooms also contain works by other Calabrian sculptors, including Francesco and Vincenzo Jerace, Alessandro Monteleone and Nicola Gullì, author of the marble “Aspettando l’onda”. The paintings by Antonio Cannata, Attilio Zagari and Giuseppe Palumbo, once part of the collection, are now displayed in the library of the complex.
