About the museum
The San Fantino complex is in Taureana, a hamlet of Palmi, in Largo Conte Pietro Antonio Spinelli. It comprises a 19th-century church, built in 1857 on the site of a building destroyed by the earthquake of 1783, the remains of early Christian and medieval churches, and the crypt of San Fantino, considered the oldest Christian place of worship in Calabria.
The crypt was discovered in 1952 during works in an abandoned church; it is a large underground chamber with brick walls, originally perhaps a Roman cistern later reused as the saint’s tomb. Excavations in 1993–1994 brought to light the Byzantine basilica of the 6th to 8th centuries, with floors and two apses, and the walls of the medieval church rebuilt in 1552 by Count Pietro Antonio Spinelli.
The restored former 19th-century church is now used as a religious museum. Since 1998 the complex has been entrusted under an adoption agreement to the cultural voluntary association Movimento Culturale San Fantino, in agreement with the heritage authorities (Soprintendenze) and with the Comune di Palmi, the owner.
