About the museum

The chestnut museum in Montegrosso Pian Latte tells the story of the chestnut tree's role in the life and economy of the community. The heart of the route is the exhibition “Il bosco addomesticato” (The Domesticated Forest), set up on the ground floor of the former primary school, near the parish church, with photo panels on six themes: historical and botanical aspects, uses of the chestnut, processing and preservation techniques, the chestnut grove between past and future, economic aspects and charcoal production.

The route continues outdoors with a restored drying kiln, a clearing with two rebuilt charcoal kilns (one whole and one in section) and a chestnut wood. In an outdoor niche stands the chestnut-beating machine built in the 1940s, an early example of mechanising a manual task. It works only occasionally, but some panels explain how it functions.
