About the museum
The museum grew out of research by Franco Dante Tiglio into the origins and content of the rural culture of Ubaga, a small village in the upper Arroscia Valley. The name recalls an ancient Ligurian term for high, cold and rugged places; the roots of this culture lie in communities of shepherds and farmers who for about two thousand years were linked to the cult of Mount Bego.
The permanent exhibition is set up on the ground floor of the S.A.A.C.S. “Sebastiano Manfredi” (Spazio Aggregativo d’Arte Cultura e Storia), in the former Augustinian convent of Pieve di Teco, and is part of the territorial museum of the Arroscia Valley.
The masks, 42 in all, have been interpreted in a poetic and sculptural way by around eighty contemporary Italian and foreign artists. They represent natural and supernatural forces, memories, events, human virtues and weaknesses, and are divided between figures favourable and hostile to humankind. The route recalls a ritual linked to the midsummer rural festivals and to the St John's bonfires, an allegory of the death and rebirth of nature.
