About the museum

The museum was founded in 1983 by volunteers, with the support of the Comune di Genova and of Father Francesco Ferraironi. It occupies fifteen rooms on three floors of the former town hall, in the medieval centre of Triora.

The route is divided into three sections. The ethnographic part documents life in the fields, the cycles of wheat, chestnut and milk, the kitchen, the cellar and wine production. The section devoted to witchcraft reconstructs, in the basement, the interrogation and the trial with documents, objects and iconography linked to the accusations, tortures and sentences of the witch hunt that struck the village between 1587 and 1589, for which Triora is known as “the Salem of Europe”. A third part is dedicated to the territory of Triora, with fauna, archaeology, art and craft, memorabilia and the Sala Brassetti.

The museum plans to expand the witchcraft section, which could move to Palazzo Stella in a future international museum on the subject.
