About the museum

“Strade di pietra”, also referred to by the municipality as the Museo della Pietra (Stone Museum), is dedicated to the tradition of stone working in the Giara valley of Rezzo. Over the centuries the inhabitants refined their knowledge and techniques, standing out across the whole Ponente Ligure (western Liguria) for the decorative elements applied to local architecture. The best-known works are attributed to the school of stonecutters of Cenova.

The museum was created by the municipal administration in collaboration with the Comunità Montana dell’Olivo e dell’Alta Valle Arroscia and is organised in two sections. The first is in Cenova, where the museum of stonecarvers is set up.

The second consists of three routes through the historic centres of the main village and the hamlets, which allow visitors to observe the decorative elements, how they were used and, in some cases, how they were reused. On the maps that can be downloaded from the municipal website, each point of interest is marked with a letter and a number, corresponding to a descriptive plaque placed beside the piece.
