About the museum

The civic lapidarium of Gradisca d’Isonzo occupies the ground floor of the Loggia dei Mercanti, also known as the Loggia Torriana, a tall, narrow three-storey building erected in 1688 by Count Francesco Ulderico della Torre on the site of an earlier Venetian loggia of 1488. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the loggia was a meeting place for the local nobility and the seat of the public weighing office, where the measures and prices of foodstuffs in the State of Gradisca were checked.

In the 19th century the building was used as a dwelling and shop; since 1939 it has been put to public use and houses the civic epigraphic museum. The collection largely derives from the collecting activity of Valentino and Ettore Patuna and comprises stone slabs, inscriptions and other stone material from Gradisca and the surrounding area.

The route, concentrated in a single room, documents the history of the town and in particular its foundation as a fortress of the Republic of Venice against Turkish raids. Among the most important pieces is the slab commemorating the fortress built in 1479 by Giovanni Emo, lieutenant of Friuli, together with coats of arms from the Venetian and archducal periods and the funerary slab of Captain Francesco Ulderico della Torre.
