About the museum
The Museo Archeologico dei Bambini, known as MAB, opened in San Pier d’Isonzo in 2012 in a room of the municipal library building. The idea came from the archaeologist Chiara Magrini, who was cataloguing the finds collected during surveys of the area and decided to display them in a way that young children could understand.
The museum was designed and set up together with teachers and pupils of the primary school, as part of the project “I bambini creano il museo” (“Children create the museum”). The captions and panels are written for children, and the display cases are set at their height. The route is not considered finished: new content is added every year, such as in-depth information sheets and reconstructions of ancient pottery kilns.
The display cases mainly present material from the Roman and late antique periods from the municipal territory, including a millstone used in the workshops. The activities vary by age: games for the youngest, simulated digs, sowing and grinding cereals, and daily life in Roman times. The municipality has obtained regional funding to renew the displays and move the museum to a larger space next to the school of ceramics; no recent updates on the project have been published.
