About the museum
The Museo documentario della città was set up in Gradisca d’Isonzo as a municipal institution and was formally established in 1963. For a long time it was housed in Palazzo Torriani, before being moved and re-displayed in a new route, with expanded scientific content and extensive use of digital tools.
The current site is Casa Maccari, a 19th-century building commissioned by Giuseppe Bartolomeo Maccari, which housed schools and training institutes until the 1970s. Today it is a municipal cultural hub that brings together the civic library, the museum, a conference hall and a workshop space for young people; the museum occupies the second floor.
The route traces the urban and social development of the town, with archival documents and historical reconstructions made with digital technologies: from its early medieval origins to the fortress defending the Venetian borders in the 16th century, and on to the Austrian period, when Gradisca became the seat of a county and was enriched with new palaces. The collections include fossils, Roman stone fragments, medieval and Renaissance weapons, coins, 17th-century canvases and Baroque frescoes from the cathedral, as well as a section on the Jewish community present in the town since the 16th century.
