About the museum
The Museo del Monte San Michele is located on the summit of the mountain, in Sagrado, in the monumental Zona Sacra: the hill, the scene of fierce fighting between Italians and Austro-Hungarians during the First World War, was declared a monumental zone in 1922. The museum tells the story of the Italian–Austrian front on the Carso and on San Michele through two exhibition rooms and the route through the Cannoniera di Cima 3.
The Cannoniera was dug into the rock between October 1916 and June 1917 for defence and housed the tactical command of the Italian Third Army. In the museum rooms, touch screens present interactive 2D maps and in-depth information, together with 3D reconstructions of the Cannoniera and the Lukachich cavern and a few original finds.
The virtual reality room has fifteen headset stations: in about 20 minutes it shows 360° films with scenes performed by historical re-enactors, including life in the trenches, the gas attack of 29 June 1916 and a flight over the area aboard Francesco Baracca’s Spad XIII. Outside, the open-air museum, always accessible free of charge, includes trenches and the Parco e Sentiero Ungaretti; with a ticket, augmented-reality content can be unlocked at the trench, the Cannoniera and the Lukachich cavern.
