About the museum
The museum grew out of the passion of Don Giorgio Franchini, who from 1926, the year he became parish priest of the Pieve di San Giovanni in Compito, collected material surfacing in the fields and set up a first antiquarium. The display remained open until 1978, when it was closed after a theft. In 1998 the Savignano municipal administration reopened it under the founder’s name, in the former elementary school next to the pieve.
The collection has grown with material from excavation campaigns, which still yield finds every year. For the pre-Roman period it documents traces from the Copper and Iron Ages, including a production site with pottery kilns and a princely burial from the 7th–6th century BC, with weapons and a chariot, discovered in 2018. For the Roman period it tells the story of the vicus that developed at the crossroads (compitum) between the Via Emilia and the road to the sea, the necropolis with more than a hundred burials, and the rural villas of the area.
The route is completed by the open-air museum (Petrone, Ponte Consolare, Pievi) and by Don Franchini’s historical archive, which has been digitised and can be consulted on site.
