About the museum
The Miniera Sant'Aloisio is in Collio, in the upper Val Trompia, where metal extraction has very ancient origins. The history of the mine begins in 1819 and work continued until 1984. Today the site is a stop on the Via del Ferro e delle Miniere (Iron and Mines Route) of the Ecomuseo della Valle Trompia and is part of the Sistema Museale of the valley.
The guided visit aims to preserve the memory of mining work, to promote an important heritage of industrial archaeology and to pass on the mining culture of the valley. The underground route, about 2.5 km long, is walked with a torch fixed to the helmet and lets visitors see the mine “in its natural state”, as it was left at the end of extraction. The guides explain extraction techniques, working conditions and the stories of the people who worked there.
On the surface, the structures of the old mine also house an adventure park. Ski-Mine, the company that runs the site, also runs other tourist mines in the Val Trompia and the Val di Scalve.
