About the museum
The Marzoli mine in Pezzaze, in the Val Trompia, was opened in 1886 and revived in 1934 by the Marzoli brothers, who extracted siderite and fluorite there. Activity stopped in 1972, but the mine was reopened and, since December 1999, has been open to visitors as a museum. It is part of the “Via del Ferro e delle Miniere” (Iron and Mines Route) and is the first stop on the visit to the valley.
The visit begins with a video introducing the geology and the life of the miner. Visitors then put on helmets and board a yellow mini train that takes them into tunnels abandoned for decades, for a stretch of about 700 metres. The route continues on foot with expert guides, who explain extraction techniques, tools and the harsh working conditions. Inside the tunnel the temperature is around 10 °C with very high humidity; the visit also goes ahead in the rain.
The ticket also includes the museum “Il Mondo dei Minatori e l’Arte del Ferro” (The World of Miners and the Art of Iron), set up in a former production and service building: one section is devoted to the history and science of local mining, the other to the iron sculptures of Vittorio Piotti (1935–2000). Tailored visits are offered for schools and, combined with the mine visit, educational workshops.
