About the museum
The Museo dell'Agro Pontino, also known as MAP, opened in 2011 in Pontinia, in a building from the 1950s that was originally a covered market. The museum preserves evidence from the periods before and after the land reclamation and presents materials from antiquity to the twentieth century, organised in themed rooms.
The routes cover the fight against malaria, the land reclamation of the 1930s and the transformation of the environment that followed, with attention to the founding of the new towns during the Fascist period and to recent archaeological finds in the area. The museum's narrative focuses in particular on the migrants who populated the Pontine plain between malaria and reclamation: everyday objects are displayed alongside historical sources on the transformation of the territory and of society.
