About the museum
The civic museum of Sabaudia, in the centre of the town, is dedicated to the sea, its ecosystems and its relationship with the life and traditions of coastal communities. The route starts with traces of prehistoric groups who lived near the coast, continues with finds from ancient civilisations recovered from the sea and the coastal lakes, and ends with marine organisms, which can be observed in an aquarium or as specimens.
The biological section displays shells from around the world, images of phytoplankton, sponges, crustaceans, sea urchins and a large Mediterranean aquarium, with the aim of making the Pontine coast and sea better known. A nature trail presents local fossils and virtual reconstructions of life in the Quaternary. The classical archaeology section includes a reconstruction of a Roman ship wrecked off Sabaudia, amphorae, tableware and navigation instruments; one part is devoted to rings and coins inspired by the sea.
