About the museum
The archaeological park of the Villa di Domiziano occupies a peninsula of about 46 hectares on the eastern shore of Lake Sabaudia, within the Circeo National Park. The name recalls the emperor Domitian, linked to the great imperial residence that once extended here.
The area preserves three clearly recognisable sectors: a thermal complex to the south, an area with large water reservoirs in the centre and a rectangular fishpond to the north. Two cisterns can be visited, the Cisterna dell'Eco (Echo Cistern) and the Cisterna delle Navi (Ship Cistern), the latter with ancient graffiti depicting boats.
Excavations began already in late antiquity. In 1977 systematic cleaning and restoration of the structures began, followed by scientific surveys in 1995 and 2002. More recent interventions of study, restoration and improved accessibility have been carried out by the competent Soprintendenza. The site is managed by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Lazio (Regional Directorate of National Museums of Lazio).
