About the museum
The water mill “Cavallo d’Ispica” stands in the northern part of the Cava d’Ispica archaeological valley, a few kilometres from Modica, and is an example of 18th-century rural craftsmanship. It has been preserved thanks to the Cerruto family, who looked after it for four generations.
Next to the mill you can visit the miller’s house, set into a cave, with a stable and hayloft also carved out of the rock. Here domestic life and the work of the peasants are reconstructed through period tools and household items.
The visit takes place in two parts, the museum and the mill. The route includes maintenance tools, the weaving room, the miller’s living quarters, garden tools, the laundry, the stable and hayloft, the water pipe with the large barrel, the water chamber with the paddle wheel, and the grinding room with the millstones.
