About the museum
The museum occupies the house in Via Posterla in Modica where the poet Salvatore Quasimodo was born on 20 August 1901. The son of a railway worker, Quasimodo grew up moving with his family between various Sicilian towns, and then settled in Messina after the 1908 earthquake. He worked as a surveyor for the Genio Civile (civil engineering office) in various cities, published his first collection of poems, Acqua e terre, in 1930, and from 1941 taught Italian literature at the Milan Conservatory. In 1959 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he collected in Stockholm on 10 December.
The museum is run by the Associazione Proserpina. The route presents a reconstruction of the poet’s Milan study and his original bedroom, with furniture and personal objects, together with signed photographs, special editions of his works and memorabilia.
Since 10 December 2016 the museum has also offered a reading room next to the bedroom, with armchairs and volumes to consult, and a multimedia room near the entrance, where visitors can watch videos, including the recording of the Nobel ceremony in Stockholm.
