About the museum
The Museo Mineralogico e Gemmologico dedicated to Luigi Celleri was founded to display, in their area of origin, the splendid crystals of the island, including the famous elbaite. Italian and foreign collectors and scholars have helped make San Piero in Campo a place of international renown for its exceptional mineralogical history.
The collections are displayed on the upper floor in 12 display cases, where tourmaline predominates. Within the tourmaline supergroup, elbaite is the most important species for beauty and gemmological interest, and it takes its name from the island of Elba: it is present with dozens of specimens in every colour, from green to yellow, pink, red, violet, blue and colourless, associated with quartz, feldspars, garnets, beryls, lepidolite, petalite, pollucite and other rare species. One case is devoted to faceted gems and two to the minerals of the metalliferous deposits of eastern Elba, with pyrite, haematite and ilvaite, a further species named after the island.
Since 2014 the museum has been run by the cooperative Pelagos, to which it was entrusted through a public tender, while the scientific direction is the responsibility of the mineralogist Federico Pezzotta. It is part of the Sistema Museale Arcipelago Toscano and is recognised as a museum of regional importance. In addition to the rooms, it includes the Garden MUM, the Galleria del granito and an educational centre; from here excursions set off to the mineralogical sites of San Piero, the granite quarries that are still active and the old village (borgo antico).
