About the museum

The museum is in Marciana, on the island of Elba, in an underground space carved into the rock in the historic centre, on Via del Giardino. Marciana was an outpost on the island of the Appiani family, lords of Piombino, and the museum tells this story through coinage.

A first section presents the coins minted by the Piombino mint between 1594 and 1699, issued for Jacopo VII Appiani and later for Niccolò and Giovan Battista Ludovisi. A second display case holds coins from the 13th to the 16th century found on the island. Panels illustrate the coinage of the princes of Piombino and, on the lower floor, the technique of hammer coining.

The museum is part of Marciana’s cultural circuit, together with the Fortezza Pisana and the Museo civico archeologico. Visitors can use an audio guide, an educational sheet in PDF format and a multimedia guide in Italian Sign Language (LIS).
