About the museum
The museum was founded in 1961 and is named after the master Tobia Aldini, who directed it from 1972 to 2003. It arose from the separation of the municipal collections of antiquities and art gathered by Andrea Benini from the 1930s onwards, and is housed on the ground floor of the Renaissance Rocca of Forlimpopoli.
The route unfolds over six rooms and traces the thousand-year history of the town and its territory. The collections cover a very wide span, from prehistoric to Roman times (the foundation of Forum Popili is dated to the second half of the 2nd century BC), up to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Along the visit you can also see the remains of the Romanesque cathedral of Santa Maria foropopiliense (12th century), destroyed in 1361 by the papal army led by Cardinal Albornoz: the Rocca was later built on its ruins.
