About the museum
The museum was founded in 1983 through an agreement between the Comune di Forlì and Ugo Foscolo Foschi, owner of the bird collection begun by his father Ferrante Foschi in 1934. The collection began with a few specimens donated by the Forlì naturalist Pietro Zangheri and grew until 1980.
The museum occupies the ground floor of Palazzo Numai, also known as Palazzo Foschi Numai. Today the collection counts over 3,000 birds from many Italian regions and is the most significant group of natural history specimens from the Forlì area, as well as the city's only natural history and science museum.
The museum is run by volunteers of the association A.Ri.F. (Associazione Rilevatori Faunisti), which is based in the same building and organises guided visits and educational modules for groups and schools. The museum has given rise to a centre for Romagna natural culture and a specialist library with over 1,600 texts and numerous journals.
