About the museum
The Interreligious Museum was officially founded in 2005, following the inter-university agreement Mediterraneum of 1995 between the universities of Bologna, Thessaloniki, Tunis, Ankara and Heidelberg, Jerusalem and two pontifical universities. The agreement made clear the need for a space where the monotheistic religions could meet, get to know one another and engage in dialogue. The museum is run by the Fondazione “Museo Interreligioso di Bertinoro”, established in 2005 by the Diocese of Forlì-Bertinoro, the Municipality of Bertinoro and the Centro Residenziale Universitario di Bertinoro.
The museum is housed in the medieval dungeons of the bishop’s rocca. The route, titled to the origins of monotheism and to dialogue among peoples, is organised in three sections: the first presents the elements shared by Jews, Christians and Muslims, from the holy city of Jerusalem to the sacred text; the second, didactic, reconstructs places and settings fundamental to the identity of each faith; the third offers immersive experiences on the birth and affirmation of monotheism.
Among the rooms stand out the Santo dei Santi (Holy of Holies), rebuilt in the 16th-century cistern of the rocca with a copy of the Ark of the Covenant and the scent of incense; the Sala dell’Agorà (Agora Room), the heart of the museum and a place of encounter among the three religions, with models of the Tabernacle and of the Second Temple; and the Sala di Mosè (Room of Moses).
