About the museum

The museum is located in Marano, the upper village of Cupra Marittima also known as Cupra Alta, and gathers the material documenting human presence in the territory from the Palaeolithic to the late Roman period. The display is organised into three sections, created at different times, spread over three floors.

On the top floor the prehistoric section presents flint tools from contrada Boccabianca, so far the oldest Palaeolithic site known in the Marche, and some bones attributed to elephants; a Neolithic hut is also reconstructed here. On the first floor the Roman section displays everyday objects such as oil lamps, glass and tableware (including fragments of Arretine ware), coins from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, mosaics and antefixes. On the ground floor the Picene section houses finds from the period of greatest development of this civilisation, between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, mainly from funerary contexts, including bronze anelloni with four or six knots.
