About the museum
Massignano is known as the town of potters: working clay, handed down from father to son, has for generations produced vases, amphorae, whistles and pipes, sold at fairs as far away as Ancona and northern Abruzzo. The museum was created after years of research among collectors, craftspeople and residents who had kept objects from the past.
The display is in the rooms beneath the civic tower, in the Palazzo Comunale overlooking Piazza Garibaldi. One section is devoted to folk terracotta, simple everyday items made in the town; the other gathers local whistles and pipes, together with examples from other parts of Italy and the world.
Among the works on show are also the remains of a 15th-century fresco from the church of Sant’Agostino e Santa Monica, showing the Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist, attributed to an unknown master from the Marche active around 1430–40. The palace stands on the site of the former church of San Giacomo Maggiore and the Augustinian convent; the civic tower dates from 1572.
