About the museum
The museum is housed in the Torrione della Battaglia, part of the walls of Grottammare Alta, built from 1540 to defend the village against pirate raids, after the sack of 1525. The tower has a circular plan and is divided inside into two floors, connected by a stone staircase and a lift installed during the restoration at the start of the century. The museum was inaugurated in 2004.
The collection, owned by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ascoli Piceno and lent to the Comune di Grottammare, is dedicated to the sculptor Pericle Fazzini (1913–1987), who was born in Grottammare. The works come from the collection of Lisa Schneider, a German model who was his collaborator and work companion in the 1960s and 1970s, and comprise about 230 pieces, including sculptures, preparatory studies, drawings, prints and documents.
What makes the collection unique are the small gold and silver sculptures cast by the lost-wax method, given by the artist to Schneider, and the silver model of the Resurrection (Resurrezione) placed in the Sala delle Udienze in the Vatican. There are also bronzes, medals and memorabilia, such as a beret that belonged to Giuseppe Ungaretti.
