About the museum

The Museo Pietraia dei Poeti stands on the summit of a hill above San Benedetto del Tronto, in contrada Barattelle, halfway between the town and Acquaviva Picena. It occupies a strip of pebbly land about two hundred metres long and some twenty metres wide, owned by the sculptor Marcello Sgattoni, where a vineyard once stood and where a pine wood now grows around an old cistern.

Sgattoni began to place many of his sculptures here, some of them monumental, made with local materials such as tree trunks and stones, which blend into the landscape. From this came the idea of creating a permanent place of display accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. The route was officially opened in August 2006 thanks to the work of the artist and many volunteers.

The route is also accessible to blind and partially sighted visitors, thanks to ground guides made of rope or wood and to descriptions in Braille or in MP3 format. In December 2006 the Fondazione Pietraia dei Poeti was founded to support Sgattoni's work and to promote exhibitions, concerts and theatrical performances in the spirit of multisensory experience. A second place linked to the artist, the Casa del Vento, is a studio in the historic centre of the Paese Alto.
