About the museum
The museum was founded in 2003 in the Palazzo Kursaal on the seafront of Grottammare as the Museo dell’Illustrazione Comica. In 2020 it was refounded and reset up under the name MIC – Museo dell’Illustrazione Contemporanea, in the same building: the south wing, which housed the Tiffany disco in the 1970s–1990s.
The permanent display is devoted to illustration in all its forms, with a focus on Italian production and local culture, and is divided into five sections: “Genius loci” and “Grottammare illustrata”, linked to the area; a section on portraits of entertainment personalities; one on classic Italian comics, through the work of the illustrator Angelo Maria Ricci; and one on new illustration by authors of the latest generation.
Among the works on display are drawings by masters such as Milo Manara, Tanino Liberatore, Bruno Bozzetto, Guido Crepax and Franco Matticchio, collages by Pablo Echaurren, works by Olimpia Zagnoli, Maicol & Mirco and Camilla Falsini, and original comic pages from Diabolik, Martin Mystère and Mister No. A link to the local artistic tradition is provided by woodcuts by Adolfo De Carolis, lithographs and drawings by Pericle Fazzini, engravings by Tullio Pericoli and Futurist portraits by Cleto Capponi.
