About the museum
The museum is housed in Torre Castle, a medieval building about three kilometres north-east of Pordenone’s centre. Under the terms of his will, the castle was designated as an exhibition venue. Count Giuseppe di Ragogna, an archaeologist, discovered and excavated the nearby Roman villa of Torre on the left bank of the Noncello in the 1950s.
The route presents the archaeological material of western Friuli in chronological order: prehistory from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Neolithic and the Copper Age, including finds from the Palù di Livenza, a site recognised by UNESCO; then the protohistory of the Bronze and Iron Ages and Romanisation. One section is devoted to finds from the Roman villa of Torre, including reconstructed frescoes, while other rooms present the medieval necropolises of Tramonti di Sotto and Palazzo Ricchieri, and medieval and Renaissance ceramics.
There is also a section on the history of the castle and on Count di Ragogna and, in the last room, two collections from outside the region, from Etruria and Magna Graecia. On the ground floor, temporary exhibitions are held with free admission, and during the year the museum offers workshops and visits for families, children and groups.
