About the museum

The Museo Diocesano di Arte Sacra of the Diocese of Concordia-Pordenone was built in 1991 and officially opened to the public in 1995. It is located in Pordenone in the Centro Attività Pastorali, designed by the architect Othmar Barth in 1988.

The collections document the worship and devotion of the Christian communities of the diocesan territory, from the 7th century to the present day. Most come from parishes where they had been left neglected, as well as from purchases, donations and long-term loans. The museum follows a dual arrangement, by type in chronological order and by purpose, and also gives space to evidence of sacramental practice and popular devotion.

The main groups include frescoes and sinopie, panel and canvas paintings, glass, wooden and stone sculptures, silverware, drawings and prints, liturgical vestments and coins. There are works by sculptors such as Alvise Casella, Giovanni Martini and Orazio Marinali, and by painters such as Pomponio Amalteo, Francesco Guardi, Nicola Grassi, Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo and Michelangelo Grigoletti. The photographic archive and courses complement the museum’s activities.
