About the museum
The Palazzo del Fumetto, known as PAFF! Palazzo Arti Fumetto Friuli, was founded in 2018 as a cultural centre that uses comics to educate and entertain. In March 2023, with the opening of the permanent display, an archive, an air-conditioned store and a consultable library, it became the Museo Internazionale dell’Arte del Fumetto. The curator is Luca Raffaelli, an expert in comics and animation.
The venue is Villa Galvani, a Venetian-style villa dating from 1850 that belonged to the Galvani family of ceramicists, in the public park just a few dozen metres from the centre of Pordenone. Renovated in the 1990s and used as an exhibition space, in 2010 it was extended with a modern art gallery and a 90-seat auditorium. The complex, covering about 2,000 square metres, also includes a teaching room, a terrace, a bookshop, a café point and a cloakroom.
The permanent display occupies the first floor and is organised into twenty sections, each devoted to one comics format: the Sunday page, the newspaper strip, the Italian libretto, the Franco-Belgian album, the Japanese tankōbon and the graphic novel. Among drawers, cabinets, facsimiles, originals and audiovisual material, there are original pages, sketches, scripts, rare publications, props and costumes from films based on comics. The collection includes over 200 original pages and about 1,500 publications and objects by more than 150 authors, acquired from auctions, private collections such as that of Salvatore Oliva, loans and donations.
