About the museum
The Atina municipal archaeological museum, founded in 1978, is one of the civic museums of the province of Frosinone. In 2000 it was moved to the upper floor of the former school building “Giuseppe Visocchi”, an elegant classical-style building in the historic centre, donated to the citizens in 1928 by the podestà (appointed mayor of the time), whose name it bears. Today the building also houses the municipal library, the finds store, a conference hall, a teaching room and conservation and photography workshops.
The route is laid out in five rooms with material ranging from the 8th century BC to the late Middle Ages, coming from Atina and other municipalities in the valley, in particular from the Ominimorti necropolises at San Biagio Saracinisco and from the Italic sanctuary of Casale Pescarolo at Casalvieri. The display follows mainly a topographical criterion; in the entrance corridor there are a coin cabinet and a lapidarium with Roman inscriptions.
The visit is completed by the “Medioevie” multimedia rooms, a virtual museum set up in Palazzo Ducale Cantelmo, with interactive stations in Italian and English dedicated to the Middle Ages in southern Lazio.
