About the museum

The Museo-Laboratorio della Zampogna is located in Villa Latina, in the province of Frosinone, in Via Pacitti, in the oldest heart of the town. It was set up to present and promote the tradition of the zampogna, an instrument that identifies an area that for centuries has been devoted to shepherding. It is at once a space of memory and information and a teaching workshop where you can learn to play the instrument and to build it using traditional techniques that local makers still use.

The building is a former school building from the 1950s, completely redesigned. The museum is part of the DEMOS project of the Lazio Region, a demo-ethno-anthropological museum network, and was among the museums selected in the 2021 call for the redevelopment of cultural sites in Lazio, which provides for a multimedia renewal and accreditation with the Regional Museum Organisation.

The route begins with a first, dimly lit room with large images, folk music and three monitors showing films about the making of the instrument, its repertoire and the history of the town. The second room, bright and overlooking the landscape, displays a traditional zampogna dismantled into its parts and a collection of zampogne (bagpipes) and ciaramelle (shawms) of various types and origins, including some rare and historic examples.
