About the museum
The museum tells the story of Fregellae, a colony with Latin rights founded by the Romans in 328 BC on a broad plateau on the left bank of the Liri, near its confluence with the Sacco. The city was destroyed in 125 BC and came back to light with excavations begun in 1978. The first venue, on the ground floor of Ceprano’s town hall, was opened in 1989 and completed in 1991.
The educational route is enriched by panels, models and reconstructions of the main monuments. The first rooms present finds from the sanctuary of Aesculapius, including fragments of the temple pediment, the remains of the altar with a dedication to the god, architectural terracottas, votive offerings and terracotta telamones from the baths. Other rooms house a cocciopesto (crushed brick) floor, terracotta slabs with tragic masks recalling the city’s theatrical activity, and a floor mosaic from the early years of the 3rd century BC, among the oldest in the Roman world.
In 2025 the museum closed temporarily to move the finds to Palazzo Ferrari, in the historic centre of Ceprano. The new display was presented to the public on 27 July 2026.
