About the museum
The idea of a foundation named after Umberto Mastroianni, one of the most eclectic sculptors of the twentieth century, arose in Arpino at the beginning of the 1970s, with the aim of promoting monumental sculpture. In 1985 the Province of Frosinone bought the Castello di Ladislao, which after restoration was to become the permanent seat. Following the 1986 exhibition in Frosinone and the donation of 81 works by the artist in 1992, the Foundation has been active since 1993; until 2013 it was housed in the Palazzo Boncompagni, and since 15 January 1999 it has been established as a foundation.
The castle stands on the hill of Civita Falconara; its oldest parts date back to the thirteenth century, and its name recalls Ladislaus I of Naples. After centuries of abandonment and rebuilding, it became a large wool mill of the Ciccodicola family, and in the twentieth century it served as an orphanage, a military hospital and a technical institute for chemists, active until 1985.
Today the Mastroianni donation comprises sculptures, woodwork, bronzes, cartoons and graphic works, alongside sections dedicated to Domenico and Alberto Mastroianni, to the Mastroianni family and film (Marcello and Ruggero), to the family’s ceramists and to a group of contemporary art linked to the artists hosted by the Foundation.
