About the museum
The museum, opened in 1976, is housed in the Palazzo della Cultura, in the Complesso Monumentale della Santissima Annunziata in Gaeta, a complex whose construction dates back to 1355. It tells the historical story of the city and its territory through collections from different periods.
The archaeological section displays Arretine terra sigillata tableware, cinerary urns, terracotta votive figurines, Roman coins, inscriptions, marble reliefs, capitals and glass. The medieval section includes Carolingian marble ribbons, leonine protomes from the 10th century, examples of folles, the coin of the Duchy of Gaeta in use between the 10th and 11th centuries, Gothic capitals and twisted columns, epigraphic fragments and ceramics.
The art section, the picture gallery, brings together frescoes, panels and canvases from the 12th to the 19th century, with works by artists such as Giovanni da Gaeta, Luca Giordano, Sebastiano Conca and Giovan Battista Beinaschi. The museum also offers educational activities for schools and groups.
