About the museum
The Museo archeologico di Saturnia, in the municipality of Manciano, houses the collection of the Ciacci family, assembled between the late 19th century and the thirties of the 20th century. The materials were partly gathered on the family’s estates and partly donated by farmers and inhabitants of Saturnia, Sovana and Pitigliano; many are linked to the research carried out by Riccardo Mancinelli between 1895 and 1903 in the Etruscan necropolises of the Fiora and Albegna valleys.
The collection was sold to the State in 1978, first displayed in the archaeological museum of Grosseto and then returned to Saturnia in 2003, to a building that had housed a school. The finds offer an overview of the characteristic materials of the middle Fiora valley from the 7th century BC to the imperial age: among them three small duck-shaped jugs, banqueting sets, oil lamps, jewellery and a four-handled krater from the mid-6th century BC.
The visit also includes Roman finds displayed in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and those from the Puntone necropolis. The museum is part of the Musei di Maremma network.
