About the museum

The museum, opened in 1985 in the centre of Manciano, reconstructs the life of the communities of the Valle del Fiora from the Palaeolithic to the Final Bronze Age. The route has been renewed with a multimedia display: every panel links via QR code to further information and translations, every room is introduced by a video, and visitors are given a tablet at the entrance. A virtual archaeologist called Lucy illustrates the different periods, while the 3D reconstruction of a prehistoric hut helps to imagine an ancient settlement.

The rooms, each marked by a different colour for each period, begin with an educational space on the Valle del Fiora and on the methods of archaeological research. They then move to the earliest inhabitants of the valley, with stone tools from Montauto-Vulci, the Palaeolithic finds of Monte Amiata and the Neolithic ones from Vacasio, Poggio Lucio and Poderi del Bufalo, and on to the Copper Age, with the grave goods of the Rinaldone culture from the necropolises of Poggialti Vallelunga, Corano and Le Calle.

The Bronze Age section centres on the materials from the settlement of Scarceta (16th–10th century BC), inhabited without interruption for centuries and known also for fragments of Mycenaean pottery, alongside the bronze hoard of Montemerano, axes and grave goods from cremation tombs of the Final Bronze Age.
