About the museum
The palaeontological museum was established in 2002 and is housed in the former church of San Tommaso in Terni, a deconsecrated building. It was once owned by the Lateran and, in the communal period, hosted meetings of the city council. The display was completely renewed in 2012 and is designed above all for children, but also interests adults.
The exhibition covers three themes: the geological evolution of the Earth, the process of fossilisation and fossil skeletons of vertebrates. The collection comprises several thousand continental and marine specimens from southern Umbria and is particularly significant for Plio-Pleistocene micromammals. The main pieces include a Mammuthus meridionalis, a Stephanorhinus etruscus, a Megantereon cultridens and a young female specimen of Axis nestii, found in anatomical connection.
Since 2012 the museum has also offered a practical educational workshop for adults and children.
