About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Pretorio of Scansano, a 15th-century building in the medieval heart of the town, formerly the administrative centre of the Terre di Scansano. Between the 18th and 19th centuries it housed the court and prison of the entire Grosseto province during the estivatura, the seasonal relocation of public offices from Grosseto to the hills to escape the malaria of the plain.
The archaeology section reconstructs human presence in the middle Albegna valley through material from research carried out in recent decades, from prehistory to the Etruscan age, with the archaic settlements and the Hellenistic fortified centre of Ghiaccio Forte, founded in the 4th century BC near the northern border of the territory of Vulci. The route continues with the Roman period and the villa at Aia Nova.
The section on the vine and wine tells the story, production, vine cycle and traditions of the area, starting from commercial wine production already carried out by the Etruscans in the 6th century BC. The tourist information and reception office (IAT) is located in the same building.
