About the museum
The original nucleus of the museum is the Muschietti collection, formed at the end of the 18th century and donated to the Comune di Portogruaro in the second half of the 19th century. Between 1873 and 1877 Dario Bertolini conducted extensive excavations in the urban area and the necropolises of nearby Concordia, the Roman Iulia Concordia, a colony founded around 42 BC for veterans. Among the most important discoveries was the “Sepolcreto dei Militi”, a necropolis of the 4th–5th centuries AD rich in inscriptions dedicated to soldiers.
At Bertolini's urging the Comune bought a plot of land from the diocesan seminary, and in 1885 the first stone of the museum was laid. The building has the form of a three-aisled Christian basilica, an allusion to early Christian Concordia. The present appearance is due to a restoration and partial re-display in 1986, which brought the exhibition up to modern standards while maintaining the historical arrangement in the room of the stone finds.
On the ground floor, in the entrance hall and the large hall, architectural remains, honorary bases, funerary monuments, statues, mosaics, portraits and a very rich epigraphic collection are displayed. On the upper floor are pre-Roman and Roman finds from local collections and from Bertolini's excavations, including figured bronzes, gems, amber, oil lamps, glass and the famous cup engraved with Daniel among the lions, as well as a selection of the most recent finds from Concordia.
