About the museum

Villa Manin was the residence of the Manin family, whose prestige was tied to the Serenissima; Lodovico Manin, the last Doge of Venice, lived here. In the 19th century the family tried to revive the estate with modern agricultural techniques, and the park was redesigned, first in a neoclassical sense by the architect Gianantonio Selva and then in romantic forms.

In the 20th century the villa experienced the upheavals of the two world wars: during the First it was close to the front after Caporetto and housed the imperial general staffs; between 1940 and 1943 it served as a refuge for artworks from Friuli and Istria, and afterwards it was occupied by German and then Allied troops.

After a slow decline, in 1961 the Ministry of Education imposed an expropriation in favour of the Ente Ville Venete, which carried out its restoration. In 1969 the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region bought the complex, with 8,500 square metres of buildings and 18 hectares of park, and opened it to the public. Today the villa is managed by ERPAC and hosts exhibitions, concerts, events and a multimedia route.
