About the museum
The museum was founded in the 1950s on the initiative of the local archaeological group, to house the grave goods of Hellenistic tombs discovered at Castiglioncello. The collections were later expanded with finds from the municipal territory and the Val di Cecina.
The largest core derives from the excavations of the port quarter of San Gaetano at Vada, carried out between 1957 and 1979. Vada was the ancient port of Volterra and an important trading centre until the Middle Ages, as shown by amphorae, coins and vessels. Since the 1980s the scientific direction of the excavations has been in the hands of the University of Pisa.
In 1996 the museum opened in its present home, the 16th-century Palazzo Bombardieri in the castle of Rosignano Marittimo, with a new layout over three floors. The route tells the story of the settlements and of the exploitation of resources along the coast, from prehistory to the Middle Ages, with attention to the relationship between people and environment and to the maritime vocation of the area. The display has an educational character and makes use of reconstructions, models and multimedia tools.
