About the museum

The natural history museum of Rosignano Marittimo, housed in Villa Pertusati, is the result of years of research in the area and of donations. Inside there are three exhibition rooms and a room for lectures, seminars and screenings, as well as smaller rooms for offices and laboratories with scientific instruments, computers and card indexes.

The first room displays Mediterranean and exotic shells, beetles, butterflies, arachnids and reptiles from the area. Of the other two, one is devoted to zoology, in particular ornithology, with an exceptional collection of waterbirds; the other holds minerals, fossils, a seed bank (spermoteca) with seeds of wild plants and a herbarium with over a thousand species typical of the municipality, together with a mycological herbarium.

In the courtyard a botanical garden has been created, with plants typical of Mediterranean scrub, coastal dunes and other particular habitats of the area.
