About the museum

In a panoramic position near the sea at San Vincenzino, the remains of a grandiose Roman villa of the imperial age have been found. The archaeological site, known since the 18th century, has revealed a complex with a long life, from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD, with several building phases and later changes of use.

The traditional attribution of the villa to the Caecina family, of Volterra and of Etruscan origin, has been confirmed by a recent publication by Fulvia Donati of the Department of Archaeology of the University of Pisa. The building, constructed in several phases, was an urban villa arranged around an atrium and peristyle, with a bath complex and an area for the production and storage of goods. Since 1983 the excavations have been overseen by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Pisa.

Some structures are protected and open to visitors; particularly striking is the large underground cistern, perfectly preserved, with an elongated rectangular plan and a barrel vault. A 3D video, produced by the Comune with the Museo Archeologico and the Isis Polo Cattaneo, reconstructs the villa in its various periods. In a room on the ground floor of the Villa Rossa there is an exhibition of reproductions of musical instruments of ancient Rome, curated by Francesco Landucci.
