About the museum
The Museo Archeologico Comunale is located in Villa Guerrazzi, in the locality of La Cinquantina. It was born (or, more precisely, “reborn”) from the desire to enrich the historical awareness of a territory rich in evidence of the past. The latest display, set up in 2003, presents the ancient history and archaeology of the Lower Cecina Valley, from the oldest coastal settlements of the Lower Palaeolithic to the last phase of the large Roman villas.
The route follows a chronological and topographical order, which takes into account the strong link between the Lower Cecina Valley and Volterra. The first two rooms are devoted to prehistory and the Iron Age. The next two house the entire grave goods of tomb A of the Casa Nocera necropolis at Casale Marittimo, including a bronze banquet service, weapons and bronze, gold and silver furnishings, a complex unique in its extent throughout northern Etruria.
The Orientalising period follows, with the aristocratic settlement of Casalvecchio and the chamber tombs of Casale, Casaglia, La Ghinchia and L’Aia Vecchia, then a collection of marble funerary cippi from the Classical period. The Hellenistic period is illustrated by materials from the hilltop settlements, including a gold crown from Belora. The last rooms present Roman tombs, finds from the villas of San Vincenzino and Casale Marittimo, and part of the transport amphorae recovered at the mouth of the Cecina. The museum is now run by the cooperative Le Macchine Celibi.
