About the museum
The museum is housed in a 19th-century palazzo in the historic centre of Nuoro that once belonged to Giorgio Asproni, and opened to the public in 2002. The collections derive from civic collections formed in the early decades of the 20th century, from finds recovered in the Soprintendenza's excavations, and from private donations.
The route presents evidence from the island from palaeontology to the Middle Ages: prehistoric Sardinian fauna, materials from the Grotta Corbeddu in Oliena and from the domus de janas, Nuragic civilisation with bronzetti (small bronze figurines) and weapons, the Phoenician-Punic and Roman periods, medieval ceramics, and a section dedicated to underwater finds.
The museum is part of the Distretto Culturale del Nuorese, a network of more than thirty museums and sites in the area, with shared benefits and joint offers. A renovation with a new two-floor display is planned.
